Unbelievable...

Postby Berkut » Wed Nov 25, 2015 1:57 pm

This one should go in the ''Believe it or not'' category,if we have one here.

Tikibar has been working on the 767-300,and I have to say, that thing is amazing. The cockpit from his 757 with full functionality,winglets... But,to have it you HAVE to download the newest FG version from the Source Forge or whatever is called.

I might be wrong, but more and more aircraft there is now available that way...but ,isn't that a blackmail?

Regards

It is now in FGADDON, and FGMEMBERS thus.
Same for SpitfireIX -- all in MEMBERS, or will be.
Shhhh
They don't know that.

No, it's just taking advantage of the new features. Bit hard on chaps who have 3.4 all the same--big reinstall if they want to use it.

Which is kind of funny. 3.4 is as of yet the official version, thus planes don't work anymore on the official version. How is that for project organization?

Hi ALL
1. @Redpath. Hey lego. They know about that. They know that no content exists in FGDATA that is not transferred to FGMEMBERS in one week's time

2. The situation with FG 3.4 is called a "Software Development Cycle". It is a normal thing in software. It has much to do with the known fact that one cannot change the past. So when you develop a new feature, that feature exists in future releases, but it does not "backdrop" to older ones. For stability purposes, previous releases are never "re-updated". For that you have "future releases" instead.

Then you have what's called the "rolling distribution" or "next" or "bleeding edge". This is where new features are coded. Thus it is where the freshest new coolest stuff exist. It comes with a price: the rolling distributions also has the most likelihood of having new introduced bugs (usually while the new hot feature gets clean up -- thus the "bleading edge" name).

So in a development cycle several releases exist, to be known

* Previous Stable releases (FG 2.12, FG 3.0, FG 3.2)
* Current Stable release (FG 3.4)
* Current bleeding edge (FG 3.7)

While aircrafts also have the same. So versions for aircrafts also exist such as they work in a given past stable release, and newly updated aircraft which may require newest features, and thus be only workeable on the "bleeding edge". That is the case of c172p and 767-300

There is nothing about "blackmailing" there.

There is something "unbelievable" thou. And it is the fact that FG 3.6 is overdue to release from the promised date almost 3 months ago. And the fact that the "officials" of our software organization felt the need to stop the release because unknown problems to us -- the same time they get upvoted as a Sourceforge Software of the Month.
In serious business world, you are not a "project of the month" if you are overdue in your releases, and late in your cycle.

What bothers me is the way Thorsten et al, have started this coding pipeline series of 'fixes' that are, for no better analogy, muzzle-loaded.

Which means that the effects and shaders for the scenery and plane appearance coding's are as much a part of the aircraft as they are part of the software's under the hood operations. It's completely backwards from most ways to introduce custom effects.

It's also rather lossy and makes for special divisions of aircraft releases, like Israel was saying. Most sims will go through new design cycles without this form of patching. I can run a really nice looking shader with reflection and shadow effects in Direct X rendering but for now what we have in FG, which appears to be the best open source and Open Gl based rendered sim, is this patchwork patch system.

I'm wondering if our Project of the Month award will get rescinded with a stern letter?

Kinda doubt it.

@Everyone:

How stable is the 3.7 bleeding edge at this point? Is it even to the level of being a Release Candidate? Is anybody in our group testing it? And if so, what kind of results are they getting? Finally, is there a chance the developers might just drop 3.6 and go to 3.7, but call it 3.8? I'm just full of questions today because I'm getting so tired of the problems with 3.4.

Yes, 3.7 is absolutely great, better performance, more beautiful, no memory leak.... get it!

I have 3.7 and I've never had a serious problem.

About bleeding edge aircraft that is why the Cessna chaps have made a "Regression version" for 3.6, 3.4, etc.

If you go 3.7, I recommend use the fgdata with submodules for you fg-root. It works awesome
